If you had purchased or downloaded a plugin from a 3rd party vendor or website, you need to manually install the plugin.

Like manually installing themes, there are also 2 ways to manually install a plugin.

  1. Using WordPress Plugin Uploader
  2. Using FTP

Installing using Plugin Uploader

This way is easier because it does not involve any software, all happens in the WordPress dashboard.

  1. Download the plugin from the vendor.
  2. Login to your website dashboard.
  3. From the Admin Menu, go to Plugins -> Add New.

  4. Click the Upload Plugin button.

Installing using FTP

There are cases that the step above will not work in your server, usually for security reason so you have to manually upload your plugin using FTP software.

  1. Download the plugin from the vendor.
  2. Extract the zipped plugin file. If your plugin is packed with documentation or other resources, locate the zipped plugin file inside the extracted folder which usually named with the plugin name and version number and again extract the zipped plugin file.

  3. Open your favorite FTP software. In the screenshot I’m using FileZilla.
  4. Upload the extracted plugin folder into the plugins directory /wp-content/plugins.
